•A global kinetic model based on conventional LNT mechanism can predict RPR behavior.•NOx conversion and selectivity trends are predicted in freq. range of 0.01–10 Hz.•Efficient use of NOx storage sites improves NOx conversion up to optimal RPR freq.•Reductant pulse mixing results in poor rich regeneration step at high freq. > 1 Hz.•Washcoat diffusion of propylene limits NOx conversion at high temperature and freq.
