•Create a high-level language feature to address the directive-based programmability gap of copying only a subset of data to and from the accelerator.•Evaluate the novel language feature across platforms using CoMD, a proxy Molecular Dynamics application and examine its performance portability.•Analyze the experimental results to determine the effectiveness of the proposed high-level feature on the performance gains as opposed to using a low-level programming framework.
