•None of the supplementary irrigation protocols rendered the mesial root canal system of mandibular molars free of hard tissue debris.•GentleWave showed better efficacy in debris removal compared with continuous ultrasonic irrigation.•The efficacy of intermittent and continuous ultrasonically activated irrigation was comparable.
