•The HRs for overall colorectal cancer risk were 0.56 in men and 0.64 in women who were high statin users after adjusting confounding factors.•Statin high users with hypercholesterolemia had lower risk of colorectal cancers in both sexes.•Statin might have different preventive activity against colorectal cancer according to anatomical site and sex.
