Synthesis, crystal structure and optical properties of a series of dipyrrins bearing peripheral coordinating groups and their BODIPYs and Zn(II) complexes

•A series of dipyrrins with peripheral coordinating units was prepared by Knoevenagel condensation.•An intramolecular hydrogen bond between the two pyrrolic rings was observed in the solid state.•A trans organization around the vinylic junctions was observed by 1H NMR and X-ray crystallography.•The corresponding luminescent BODIPYs and Zn(II) complexes were prepared.•In DMF solution, the BODIPYs are better emitters than the homoleptic Zn(II) complexes.
