摘要
Myopia is the most common eye condition in the world [1]. In 2004, the prevalence of myopia in adults in the United States was reported to have grown to 41% from 25% in 1979 [2]. At the current rate, it is estimated that 50% of American adults will be myopic in 2020 [1]. A notable group of world health experts project that with current trends, half of the world population (about 5 billion) will be myopic by 2050 [1]. An alarming 1 billion (20%) of those will be considered “highly myopic” (more than 5.00 diopters [D]) with high associated risk of ocular pathology [3].
