Genetic increases in growth do not lead to trade-offs with ecologically important litter and fine root traits in Norway spruce

•Three fold differences in growth among 14 progenies of Norway spruce.•Progenies varied in ecologically important fine root and litter traits.•Genetic increases in growth had little effect on the expression of other traits.•Tree genetic origin and increased growth itself may impact forest ecosystems.
