Fluorescence lifetimes of crude oils and oil inclusions: A preliminary study in the Western Pearl River Mouth Basin, South China Sea

•Physical properties and chemical composition control fluorescence lifetimes of oils.•Oil characteristics in single inclusions can be derived from fluorescence lifetimes.•Inclusion oil and crude oil have diverse physical properties and chemical compositions.•Two oil charge events are indicated in the Western Pearl River Mouth Basin.
