•Brij 58 functionalized Praseodymium oxide (Pr6O11) nanostructures.•Utilization of Pr6O11 nanostructures for smoke sensing applications.•The Pr6O11 nanoparticles are capable of removing 99–100% of toxic gases viz. NOx, CO and SO2.•The regenerative ability of the particles makes the process facile and economical.
