•Propose a method to evaluate aesthetic appearance of waste incineration plants.•177 cases from traditional style to post-modernist in China were evaluated.•Aesthetic appearance is weakly correlated with environmental performance.•Most cases lack aesthetic appearance even in the more developed provinces.•Good aesthetic appearance and social sustainability reduce NIMBY syndrome.
