•A novel Cr immobilizing strain QY-1 was isolated.•Cr was significantly immobilized by the combination of nZVI/HA and QY-1.•The synergy between QY-1and HA was stronger than that with nZVI.•Effect of HA + bacterium on soil biochemical properties was first studied.
