Abstract
•Low-grade inflammation associates with obesity and insulin resistance and may in part be due an ineffective inflammation resolution.•In a 16-week controlled trial, the effect of weight loss on neutrophil lipid mediators of inflammation resolution (SPM) was examined in humans with the metabolic syndrome (MetS).•Resolvin E1 was the major SPM release from neutrophils.•Weight loss led to a 2-fold increase neutrophil resolvin E1.•These findings have important implications in terms of mounting an appropriate immune response to infection in patients with the MetS.
