Characterization of a Novel Rhabdovirus Isolated from a Stranded Harbour Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena).

•Harbour porpoise rhabdovirus is a novel rhabdovirus most closely related to the dolphin rhabdovirus.•Cetacean rhabdoviruses formed a well-supported clade separated from known genera within the family Rhabdoviridae.•Cetacean rhabdoviruses may have arisen following a host jump from fish and belong to a new genus within the family Rhabdoviridae.
