•Early smallpox and BCG vaccination may reduce cutaneous malignant melanoma.•Median smallpox and BCG vaccination age was 4.5 and 7.5 years in this Danish study.•Smallpox and BCG vaccination were not associated with cutaneous malignant melanoma.•Smallpox and BCG vaccination given below 1 year of age gave similar results.•Due to uncertainty, results do not contradict a potential modest preventive effect.
