•GRACE can measure total water storage anomaly (TWSA) for the 50,000 km² Garonne basin.•GRACE monthly time resolution add uncertainties to basin water balance computation.•Good agreement between GRACE solutions and hydrological models SIM and SWAT.•Garonne TWSA is due to water in the first dozen meters of soil and in shallow aquifer.
