•Photodegradation of DBDPE adsorbed onto silica gel in water was evaluated.•OH radicals were the main ROS for the photooxidation of DBDPE.•The formation of hydroxylated DBDPEs products was reported for the first time.•Hydrodebromination and hydroxylation were proposed as the main reactions.
