•Differences in blade design may affect the successfulness of tracheal intubation.•Video-assisted laryngoscopy improves patient safety by increasing first-pass success.•Video-assisted laryngoscopy could be recommended as a ‘first-option’ for inexperienced clinicians.•The GS and KV-NCh showed equivalency regarding first-pass success.•Improved laryngeal visualization may not equate to successful tracheal tube delivery.
