Pore-network modelling of non-Darcy flow through heterogeneous porous media

•The onset of non-Darcy flow occurs earlier in heterogeneous porous media.•Heterogeneous porous media are composed of zones poorly connected to each other's.•Direct simulation is computationally expensive compared to pore-network modelling.•Using Forchheimer number is recommended instead of Reynold's number.
