Patterns and trends in outpatient diagnostic imaging studies of the Brazilian public healthcare system, 2002-2014

•Diagnostic imaging usage greatly increased in the public health system in Brazil.•Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed the greatest increase.•Machine availability and number of procedures per machine increased over time.•Diagnostic imaging usage in Brazil was still much lower than in developed countries.
