•Dicaffeoylquinic acids (DiCQAs) from Ilex kudingcha attenuated DSS induced colitis.•DiCQAs enhanced gut barrier integrity and decreased inflammatory cytokines.•DiCQAs increased short chain fatty acids and modulated the gut microbiota.•DiCQAs attenuated colitis may through regulating the 5 key gut bacteria.
