Smoking characteristics and alcohol use among women in treatment for alcohol use disorder

•Over 1/3 of women in alcohol treatment were currently smoking cigarettes.•Cigarette smoking was associated with greater alcohol use severity.•Women who smoked cigarettes had lower rates of completing alcohol treatment.•However, many current smokers were motivated to quit smoking.•Findings have implications for treatment of both alcohol and smoking.
