•No meta-analysis has been conducted to summarize the credibility of evidence of risk factors for AFR after surgery.•This meta-analysis finds that several risk factors are significantly associated with AFR with different quality of evidence.•These findings strengthen clinical awareness of early warning to identify patients with high risk for AFR.
