Synthesis, photophysics, and photochemistry of ball-type phthalocyanines

•Four novel ball-type phthalocyanine compounds are described.•All exhibited low fluorescence quantum yields and high triplet quantum yields.•All demonstrated good stability in DMSO, suggesting photostability.•These complexes may have potential applications in photodynamic therapy.
