Acclimatizing to automation: Driver workload and stress during partially automated car following in real traffic

•On-road study with Tesla Model S’ Autopilot investigated the effects on workload and stress.•Psychophysiological measurement suggests acclimatization to automation.•Low and reducing levels of perceived workload as well as reducing heart rate were found.•High engagement and lower detection rate, compared to simulator studies, may indicate safety prioritization.
