Metal contamination among endangered, threatened and protected marine vertebrates off south-eastern Australia

•Trace elements in marine species from south-eastern Australia were generally low.•Only Hg, Cd, and As were recorded above health-threshold levels.•Hg concentrations could evoke long-term impacts among relevant marine organisms.•The results support the need for ongoing contaminant-accumulation studies.
