•A method for identification and evaluation of hotel brand competitiveness is introduced.•Competitiveness is defined as feature set that makes a brand most distinctive.•The method employs probability distribution and earth mover’s distance.•The method is demonstrated using hotel rating data collected from Booking.com.•Competitive advantages and disadvantages of hotel brands in Hong Kong is revealed.
