•Dislocation nucleation and evolution mechanisms during void collapse are discussed.•The structure of non-planar loops in hcp crystal is different with that in cubic crystal.•Void size affects the mechanical response during void collapse.•The possibility and mechanism of dislocation loop detachment are presented.
