Relations between mathematics achievement growth and the development of mathematics self-concept in elementary and middle grades

•Students reported declining levels of mathematics self-concept across the middle grades.•Mathematics self-concept in third grade was associated with third grade mathematics achievement.•Math achievement growth was associated with less math self-concept loss in Grades 3–8.•Math achievement at kindergarten entry was associated with later math achievement and self-concept growth.
