Design of dual-coated optical fibers to minimize thermally induced static fatigue caused by viscoelastic behavior of commercial polymeric coatings

•The fiber’s static fatigue is affected by the exact viscoelastic behavior of polymeric coatings.•The axial tensile thermal stress acted on the optical fiber is obtained by viscoelastic theory.•Design of dual-coated optical fibers to reduce the thermally induced static fatigue is proposed.
