•Conventional farming systems in the Brazilian semi-arid region reduces SOC stocks.•In this region, a new steady state of SOC does not occur before 40 years of use.•The loss of SOC stock decreases with depth, especially considering the 0–100 cm layer.•Land-use change factors specific to Brazilian semi-arid are smaller those IPCC default.
