•ZnO:Co2O3 nanocomposites by pulsed laser fragmentation of cryomilled samples.•Laser fragmentation in water resulted with nanoflakes morphology.•Established their structure, morphology, composition and optical properties.•All nanocomposites showed photocatalysis under visible light irradiation.•Stable, cyclic photocatalytic properties were observed.
