•NiFe2O4 promotes bio-char conversion at elevated temperature around 850 °C.•An optimal lattice oxygen/biomass ratio is 0.51 giving the highest syngas yield.•Steam/biomass ratio of 2.25 gives the maximum carbon conversion of 92.53%.•Biomass CLG coupled with H2O/CO2-splitting gives syngas with flexible H2/CO ratio.
