Dynamic Performance of a High Accuracy Generator Model for Stability Analysis

The accuracy of generator dynamic models is critical to the economic planning and secure operation of today's power grid with increasing stochastic and dynamic behavior. This paper proves a novel method of improving generator dynamic models used in stability studies, with higher accuracy and better dynamic performance. The basic structure of the new model is based on the well-established standard second-order generator equivalent circuits, with the innovative method of modeling the loaded generator field current. In-depth theoretical comparison is made between the proposed new model and the state-of-the-art GENTPJ model recently approved by North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). The performance and accuracy of this new model is demonstrated using field measurement results collected from in-service generator, which outperforms existing stability models implemented in major vendors' software packages.
