The identification of individuals by observational gait analysis using closed circuit television footage: comparing the ability and confidence of experienced and non-experienced analysts

•Gait analysis evidence accepted at trial from both lay and expert witnesses.•Gait analysis abilities of experienced and nonexperience analysts compared.•No significant difference in the number of correct identification decisions made.•Nonexperienced analysts significantly more confident in decisions even if incorrect.•Care needs to be exercised in the submission of gait evidence from lay witnesses.
