•Based on general requirement for containment, detailed comparision between containment for PWR and HTR are provided.•Detailed comparison between different implementation of containment in different HTR are provided.•Improvement on the implementation of containment in HTR-PM600 are provide.•The advantages of VLPC for HTR-PM600 are presented.
