Sustainability and optimization in the automotive sector for adaptation to government vehicle pollutant emission regulations

•Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the automotive sector is promoted by EU.•An algorithm to increase the energy efficiency of combustion vehicles is presented.•Economic benefit will be quantified in terms of emission quotas and fuel consumed.•Conclusions about times, distances travelled, and energy consumed, are reached.•The methodology has been successfully applied and results are discussed.
