Power-law estimation of branch growth

•capability of power law models was demonstrated using branch growth analysis.•selected explanatory variables were incorporated in standard allometric equations.•basic statistical methods were applied in variable selection and parameterization.•models reproduced an authentic growth trajectory of a branch initiated at crown top.•models were capable of generating multiple documented details of branch growth.
