•EPSM method for environmental covariate similarity and calculating sample selection.•Proposed a new asymmetrical environmental contrast index between sites.•Case studies show that the proposed EPSM method performs better than SoLIM.•EPSM is shown to be an effective PSM method that can be widely used in soil mapping.
