•A novel blind tone mapped image quality assessment with image segmentation and visual perception is presented.•Tone mapped image’s distortion is represented according to image segmentation with texture and illuminance.•A feature clustering scheme is designed to optimize feature selection.•Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method.
