Holocene glacier behavior around the northern Antarctic Peninsula and possible causes

•New 10Be ages document former cryospheric activity around the northern Antarctic Peninsula.•From >11 to ∼8 ka, recession of glacier systems occurred around James Ross Island.•After 8 ka, repeated glacier expansions of local glaciers occurred.•The largest Holocene local glacier extents were between ∼7 and ∼4 ka.•Past cryospheric activity related with SAM-like conditions, westerlies, polar vortex.
