•Microstructure of Ni-Co coating was controlled by electrodeposition parameters.•Microstructure influenced CO2 corrosion resistance of Ni-Co coatings for 100 times.•The contact area, active defects and surface oxides play key roles in CO2 corrosion.•Ni-Co coating enhanced the CO2 corrosion resistance of X65 steel by 1000 times.
