A note on the recent use of tree-ring data to investigate a Sun-Amazon River link

•We reinterpreted the results from a previous tree-ring proxy-based study of a sunspot-Amazon River link.•Strong 1915–2018 evidences for a causal link were previously misinterpreted as weak.•We identified possible causes of the apparent 1915 onset of a causal sunspot-Amazon link.
