•Cu-Al and Co-Al spinel oxides were tested as catalysts for the RWGS.•Higher degree of inversion of spinel increases the oxygen vacancy concentration.•Oxygen vacancies provide additional active sites for CO2 adsorption and activation.•Creating oxygen vacancies through alkaline treatment confirmed the conclusions.
