•Many under-utilized organic wastes contain substantial nitrogen and lignin.•Pyrolysis is effective, but less selective, at compound extraction than biochemical methods.•N in feedstock can increase bio-oil yield and energy content at a loss in bio-oil quality.•Bio-oil requires upgrading to remove N prior to storage or combustion.
