•Advanced glycation end products interfered with normal differentiation of neural stem cells.•Histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) was increased in neural stem cells of diabetic mice.•Knocking down the expression of HDAC3 could partially attenuate the inhibitory effect of AGEs on NSC differentiation.
