Abstract:

A novel spot-size converter with a buried asymmetric taper which enables a $0\,\mu \mathrm{m}$-wide tip is proposed for high coupling efficiency between a deep-ridge waveguide device and an optical fiber. As a result of measurement, fabricated devices showed a very low mode conversion and coupling loss of 0.6 dB/facet.
