•Different bacteria induce alteration of petroleum hydrocarbons in various ways.•Surfactin can significantly enhance the removal rate of alkylaromatic and saturated hydrocarbons.•Alkyldibenzothiophenes and triaromatic steroids are useful indicators of the extent of biodegradation of petroleum.
