•A new D-A type π-conjugated organic chromophore (RBTh-NR) synthesized with isatin-core moiety.•RBTh-NR chromophore was utilized as donor material for bulk heterojunction organic solar cells (BHJ-SMOSCs).•Effect of 1, 8-diiodooctane (DIO) as an additive was investigated on performance of BHJ-SMOSCs.•Optimized BHJ-SMOSC displayed the promising power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ∼4.10 %.
