Earthquake-driven destruction of an intertidal habitat cascade
Aquatic Botany(2020)
摘要
•Large-scale disturbances, including earthquakes and seismic uplifts, can swiftly kill intertidal habitat-forming seaweeds.•On 14 November 2016, a 7.8 Mw earthquake uplifted intertidal reefs along 110 km on the Kaikōura, New Zealand coastline.•Habitat-forming fucoid seaweeds and associated invertebrates were greatly reduced in abundance on uplifted reefs.•Epiphytes associated with these seaweeds, especially Notheia anomala, became functionally extinct after the earthquake.•Natural recovery is expected to be slow because of low propagule supply and negative feed-back mechanisms.
