•ZnO NRs were applied for the designing of photoluminescence-based immunosensor.•Vertically oriented ZnO NRs were used as whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator.•Quasi-WGMs were experimentally observed in photoluminescence spectra of ZnO NRs.•Modification of ZnO NRs by proteins changed resonance frequency in quasi-WGMs spectra.•The immunosensor was applied for the determination of grapevine A-type virus (GVA).
